Gallery - Western Lakes, Wastwater and Ennerdale
The most spectacular mountain scenery lies in the west of the Lake District where England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, towers over the head of the valley of Wadale. Historic rock climbs are here and on Great Gable and Pillar Rock. Wasdale's tiny Church, St Olaf's, has interesting gravestones of mountaineers. To the south of Wastwater is unspoilt Eskdale where the village of Boot is the terminus of 'La'al Ratty', a narrow-gauge railway that starts at Ravenglass on the coast. Ennerdale is one of the quietest lakes where pleasant walks on Forestry Commission tracks lead along the lake overlooked by Pillar mountain.
